"Teach a child according to his or her way" (Proverbs 22:6).
I was born in Germany and grew up in Israel from the age of one to the age of sixteen. My family and I emigrated from Israel to the United States in my senior year of high school. I graduated from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn and continued my education at Brooklyn College , where I majored in Psychology and Foreign Languages with a minor in Secondary Education. In addition, I graduated from the Teachers' Institute of Yeshiva University where I majored in Jewish Education, Hebrew literature, and Bible Studies. I am licensed by the New York City Department of Education, and by the New York Board of Jewish Education. I taught Hebrew School for eleven years, and in 1981, I joined the staff of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union , where I had taught until June 2008. For the past three years I was also the co principal of the Hebrew School at congregation B'nai Jeshurun in Staten Island . I have been married to my husband Charles for forty years. We have two children, Ronnie and Jeffrey and four adorable granddaughters. I am looking forward to this new adventure in my life. We will be moving to Manhattan and I am excited about teaching at the West End Synagogue, where I will continue to "teach my students according to their way".
Youth Educator, Mick Fine
This summer, we welcomed our first ever Youth Educator to the West End Synagogue staff team.
Mick will be wearing many hats this year, including teaching Hebrew school (2nd/3rd grade
and 6th/7th grade), leading family services on holidays and Shabbat, running our Hodesh Hevre
and supporting the Oral History Project. He will also serve as Tikkun Olam coordinator, running
all five of our intergenerational ‘family friendly’ community service programs.
In addition to teaching, Mick has developed curricula for Hazon as well as a number of
congregational schools. He was most recently employed by the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan,
where he taught Torah, Talmud and Hebrew. Mick has spent the last three summers teaching 8th and 9th
graders at the Center for Jewish History.
Families with teenagers are invited to meet Mick at our teen orientation program on Tuesday, Sept. 8
at 6PM. All families will get to meet Mick on our first days of Hebrew school (Sept. 15 & 16) or
during the High Holy Days. Mick can be reached at mfine@westendsynagogue.org.
This summer we were also lucky enough to have Mike Weis start as our education intern for
2009 - 2010. Mike will be invested as a cantor and receive an M.A. from the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America with a focus on Synagogue School Educational Administration.
Mike brings not only the skills you would expect from a cantorial and education student, but also
the experience of a business owner, graphic designer, actor, and writer. He has already been hard
at work this summer, dividing his time between shadowing and assisting Sarah and the Jewish Family
Life & Learning team.
You can expect to meet Mike during Hebrew school hours and Tuesday and Wednesdays during regular
committee meeting times. Mike can be reached at
mweis@westendsynagogue.org.
