Yom Kippur 5768-2007: For The Sin (Al Khet)
by Barbara Gish-Scult

For the sin we have sinned before you by having changed so little

….. since last Yom Kippur………. and the one before that.

For the sin of saying “Never Again”

……while genocide continues ….again…..and again..

For the sin of not bearing witness with as much kavanah as we could have...

For the sin of dividing people into “us” and “them” and giving short shrift to

their suffering, their humiliation, their right to life.

For the sin of being patronizing to the poor

…..when in many cases, metaphorically speaking……….. we have stolen their bread

For the sin of compulsive shopping for things we already have too much of..

For the sin of consuming 30% of the world’s products

….when we are only 5% of the population.

For not getting the connection between

overconsumption and global warming ………..

overconsumption and the extinction of species…………..

overconsumption and the depletion of the rain forests….

overconsumption and the fact that polar bears are drowning. ....

For ignoring the suffering we inflict on our fellow man and fellow creatures

……..to satisfy our bloated needs

For the sin of not understanding why many people

……….. in many countries…………. no longer respect us

For thinking that leaving our computers on all night won’t really make a difference.

For not using environmentally friendly products

…….as if the life of our world depended on it ……….……because it does.

For not letting our hearts break

……over the brokenness of the world.

For not knowing that a broken heart is

………. the beginning of healing………… and healing is our true live’s calling.

For not knowing that the healing of the world and the healing of ourselves

.... are not different things.

For the sin of thinking we can do it tomorrow

……………. but if we wait any longer there isn’t going to be any tomorrow.

For not knowing what time it is

……when it is …ten minutes to 12 on the doomsday clock.

For letting ……………. so many years go by

…….and the answers……….the answers…….are still blowing in the wind.

For the greatest sin of all

………WHICH WE HAVE NOT YET COMMITTED.

The sin of not realizing that right this minute

……….. we have the power to turn it all around…...

No, there is not going to be a revelation…….It would be nice…….but I don’t think so.

No…….we are probably not going to hear the voice of God

.……But……The gates are not yet closed…yet

…..and we

………….we just have to say Hineni……I am here………I AM RESPONSIBLE……….and mean it.

Otherwise, what are we doing here today

……if not awakening our deepest and truest self.

This is the moment…..when we say Hineni

……or we don’t.

This is the moment when we say “NOW!”

……as in……If not NOW….When?…….or we don’t.

But…… if we do……… ..……….

then we will unleash a tidal wave of goodness

………. we will harness The power of the human soul ..Soul power

……..that’s what Gandhi called it.

And then……………….BANEYNU………OOVNEY……BANEYNU……….yevarcho etchem……….

THEN OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN

WILL BLESS US AND THE WORK OF OUR HANDS WILL ENDURE.……
