Lifne Ha-Shofar
Joshua Greenberg
HH 2007

Before Shema, there is Tekiyah.

Before listening, there is awakening.

Awake! before Tikkun,

from the Akedah to today;

from the first to the last;

from our fathers and our mothers

to our children and to our children’s children;

from the Head of the universe

to the end of Ein Sof.

This year may we return

to see the shofar of the First Ram

struggling with G-d before us,

and may we remember

to hear Truth

from the still small voice within its call

       ----------------

Lifney Shema, yesh Tekiyah.

Lifney lishmo’a, yesh l’hitorer

Hitoreri! lifney Tikkun,

in ha-Akedah ad ha-yom;

in rishon ad ahkaron;

m’avotenu v’imotenu

ad banenu u’benei banu;

min ha-Rosh ha-Olam

ad Sof ha-EinSof.

Lu yehi ve’Nashuva HaShana

Lekhezot beShofar Eylo Avraham Avinu

sar im Elohim le’eneinu,

v’shenizkeh lizkor

shema et ha-emet

m’ha-kol demamah dekah b’kola.

Tekiyah!

Kol shalem:

ki gam atah, YH shomea.

A complete sound:

that You, Yah, are also listening.

She-var-im!

Kol bekhiyah

ki nihyeh re’uiim le’shimkha.

A weeping sound:

that we may be worthy of Your Name.

T-e-r-u-u-a-a-a-h!

Kol shevira:

koreh le’nitzotzor ruhkahka banu

A shattering sound:

calling the shards of Your Spirit within us.

Tekiyah gedo(v)lah.

Kol m’tikvah:

ki olamhka yetukan.

A sound of hope:

that Your World will be healed.

Ha-Yom.  Ha-Yom.  Ha-Yom.

Ken yehi ratzon.
