Mordechai and Esther Beauty Contest Duet -
sung to variations on In That Great Getting' Up Morning
(This song is supposed to use counterpoint + Chorus)

Ken Klein

Mordy:
Oh the sun's a risin' Esther
And I hope that you can see
The king's getting rid of Vashti
Is our opportunity!

You don't have to be a prophet
To see God's hidden hand
If you only win the contest
You'll be queen of all the land!

It's a great day, it's a great day
It's a great day, the Lord's asked you to choose
It's a great day, it's a great day
It's a great day, could be a great day for the Jews

Esther:
Uncle Mordy, I've been thinking
Is the palace near a shul?
Why be just a trophy wife
I'd rather go to cantorial school

I can see where this is heading
The sacrifice I'm asked to make
Throw my own dreams in the dustbin
Wed the king for my people's sake

Mordy:
Do you think I want this Esther
To Achashvarosh, you'd betroth (long "o" in betroth)
But I detect a hidden pattern
This thing's bigger than us both

My advice is join the pageant
And if God thinks it's a sin
He'll blame me - but if it's prov'dence
Then I know you're gonna win

Esther:
Okay, I'll trust you, Uncle Mordy
Give this pageant thing a whirl
See what life's like in a harem
For a nice, protected Jewish girl!

Both:
It's a great day, it's a great day
It's a great day, we can't afford to lose
It's a great day, it's a great day
It's a great day, could be a great day for the Jews!
